A quick afternoons work...

The missus had a go at us today about the state of my side of the house which generally is code for my hobby room. Looking at it this morning she had a point so I set about having a general tidy up.

All my miniatures went away where they reside between games, White Dwarfs, Codices and other books were sorted and placed on their shelf and the paint station received a clean and reorganisation.

My newly organised and clean work space after I started painting - including a couple of projects I have started and should really finish

Having done all that, I figured I would do a spot of painting so I pulled out one of my Reaper miniatures from the shelves of shame (That is my pile - organised pile mind) and set to work. My goal was to produce a table top quality mini with a minims of fuss.

The shelves of Shame - even the missus thinks I have too much and had a dig about getting more painted

I picked out the Gavin, Warrior Thief mini by Bobby Jackson as I plan on using him in the D'n'D campaign which I am meant to be taking part in. Gaming wise I have been in a funk with a lot of the blame resting on my work committments and me generally being knackered when I get in, so many of the other gaming committments I had ie the instore 40K campaign, previous Death Watch campaign, potential intro to Malifaux etc all fell by the wayside. My mates that are organising this new D'n'D campaugn are cool for it to operate every second week which means I am more likely to have time to attend and maintain my gaming mojo.

Anyway, I knocked him out this arvo in a couple of stints at the table (still had to get some gardening and general house work in there). 4 colour base coats (red, brown, metal and flesh) followed by a mixed Devlan Mud/Thrakka Green wash and then highlights and he was done - nice and simple and to a standard I am happy with. (excuse the flock in his hair - I always find it after the photos have been taken). Was aiming for a lacquered leather armour look like the Samurai used to run with. I haven't hit him with a gloss varnish so the sheen on the mini in the pics is a bit odd - might be something to do with the way the picture was taken or the wash -?).

The Reaper range is really diverse, with loads of little gems hidden in there. I have another order with them now for some other minis that would be suitable for D'n'D as NPC or other PC's in the future.

So thats it - an afternoons work and a new mini painted - I should do this more often and try to get through some more of my paint queue.

Cheers all,

Pom

  1. *cracks whip* Paint, paint, paint!

    ;>

A lot of black in your "shelves of shame", but this should offer a grand opportunity to get some more of your chaos warband painted and ready for battle!

Regarding Gavin, I think you've achieved the samurai-leather armour look you wanted (I think it's the washes, seem to recall they could have that effect), and he looks like a nice "could be any kind of warrior'ish character for DnD".

  2. If I had a shelf of shame I'd be so overwhelmed by it I'd probably die. I hide my unpainted shame in dark places.

Perhaps your wife and mine should start a support group. Mine generally just avoids my work area though.

Nice work on the Reaper mini. I have a friend that has done some sculpts for them and I've had a tour of their facility as it quite close to where I live. Nice bunch of folks.

  3. WoW! That's allot of unpainted minis!

I'd say it's time to buy some brushes and get working!

  4. Ha - Thanks all. That's what happens when you move from being a Uni student to the real world with a disposable income and no other responsibilities - I've slowed down on the purchase front considerably since we got the house and have actual bills to pay now.

If you discount the Empire and Guard armies which were bought and built to be the OpFor to my main Fantasy and 40K armies, its not that bad.

@Noeste - Yeah I am going to play a Warrior/Rogu type so the mini seemed the best fit from what I had on the shelves.

@Geek - The missus does tend to stay out but she wanted to see what all the banging had been when I was cleaning. The Reaper facilities from the pictures I've seen does look mighty impressive, abd their customer service has been exceptional each time I have dealt with them.

@Larry -- I have the brushes, just too little time.

    Thanks all for stopping by.

  5. wow, looks like a bitch to dust!

God only knows what my man room will look like when I finally get one!

  6. Ha - Cheers Smurf. You're right on the dusting. Fortunately I am a bit of a fiddler when it comes to my minis so I tend to take them of the shelf, ponder them, and then work out ways to better maximise the space used which means they never settle in one place for too long and that gives me an opportunity to dust.

Thats not actually my 'man room' - its our spare room come dog house (for me not the dog, he sleepd outside). I just store my minis and paint there - the man room is in our detached double garage which holds my table and storage for terrain etc. That was part of the reason we chose this house, so I had somewhere to game without taking up the dining room table.

You'll get yours one day mate - don't you have to finish your study first?

  7. hahahaha, time to paint neede over there!
As the Inner Geek said, my box of shame is pretty much hidden and in dark places xD

Luckily, it's not as big as yours =P
(but I would still love having that amount of minis!)

    Cheers mate, see ya!
