A real quick one to mark an observation I stumbled across tonight. Like many bloggers, I run Google Analytics over the old blog to keep a track of some basic stats. Being a numbers man for work purposes, the idea of getting more numbers from this aspect of my hobby was enticing.
Now generally things are fairly steady with hit rates, unique views, sources, etc. but having made the Tuesday Top 10 on FTW this week (for which I am overwhelmingly chuffed - just ask my missus, I didn't stop mentioning it for about an hour after I found out), my page views have gone through the roof, completely skewing my lovely trends.
In the long run this isn't a problem as I expect my stats to return to trend over the next week. But what it does do is it shows how powerful a tool community assets like FTW become, enabling members of the community to showcase their hobby to a massive audience.
So I want to throw a quick shout out to Ryan of On the Painting Table for trawling the blogosphere and compiling the top 10 each week, and Ron at From the Warp for showcasing it, and the bloggers out there for making it happen by posting your awesomeness.
Cheers all,
Pom

Happened to me, once, and my hits went through the roof. Then people started to come back and check things out, so while there was a strong peak at first it did also pay off in the long run, at least until I started to slow down my blogging (read:screeching halt) so now that I have started up my blogging again I will have to work my way back up the ladder.
ReplyDeleteGuess I have to come up with something awesome that would fit on the top 10 again:) Although I think my WAAAGH! inspired pumpkin carving is quite awesome.
Ha - You're pumpkin is pretty bad arse.
ReplyDeleteCheers mate
Unfortunately they don't seem to last, and mine won't last a week so I am thinking of getting a few pumpkins and carve them up on Friday. Make a new one like this one, and then maybe a bad moon one and whatever else strikes my fancy at the day :)
ReplyDeleteWAAAAGH!
I use both GA and Blogger's stats tab (for quick reference) and From the Warp regularly is the entry point for about 1,200 hits a week, just a little behind BoLS and way ahead of any others.
ReplyDeleteWhen I do hit the Top 10, it suddenly jumps way up and that whole month will reflect FTW as the top entry page for the blog not to mention that the hits for the first two days after the top 10 comes out equal about 5 days of regular traffic.
I just hope Ryan knows what an intensly great thing this is for the blog community, the guys who make the top 10 and the folks who are just drifting around looking for inspiration.
Ryan and Ron both need to be thanked for the efforts they go too in promoting the hobby and community. I really believe that they are a massive community asset, and deserve recognition.
